Spotlight – Darrell Nutt

Spotlight on the wonderfully talented musicians who performed on The Jones Thing’s upcoming album “Ephemeral Oddities”

Darrell Nutt – drums and percussion
Fort Myers, Florida – drummer and producer and so much more

After I had assembled enough demos that I wanted to flesh out, I started looking for a drummer who could record his own tracks. I spent about 3 weeks reviewing over 50 drummers – they had to be top-notch, because to me, the drums are the most important part of any song to me. Without the rhythm and the groove you’ve got nothing. The difficulty was finding someone who could play all sorts of styles, while having a keen ear for the songs themselves. Some could swing but not rock, others could jam but anything other than 4/4 time signatures sounded off. I finally found Darrell and just threw him all of the unfinished demos and said have at it, do your thing. Within a week I had tons of drums, expertly tracked. Songs like ‘Theme for a Buddy Detective Show’ really show of his chops while ‘Paper Taken by the Wind’ highlight his originality and creativity. He can do it all and do it perfect while writing parts for the sake of the song.

Spotlight – The Legendary Rich Gilbert

The Legendary Rich Gilbert – Electric Guitar on ‘Awakend from Cryosleep’, ‘What God Believes’, ‘The High Life’ and ‘The Subconcious Disease’
Pedal Steel on ‘Big Bag’ and ‘The Subconcious Disease’

As I was starting to flesh out parts to several of the songs I said to myself, “These really call for a Rich Gilbert guitar part” like on those Frank Black and the Catholic albums. Raw and etherial at the same time. And after a few failed attempts to find someone who understood what I wanted, I thought, “I wonder if Rich himself would be interested.” Sure enough, he offered to record on his website and I reached out to him. In a few weeks I had tons of guitars for each of the five tunes I thought could use his magic. I quickly arranged and edited a few of the tracks, but on many of the songs, I couldn’t bear to lose even one of the tracks he recorded. His understanding, brilliance and strong playing are just amazing and I couldn’t be happier with the result.
